This post is all about my 1992 Honda Prelude Si. The best car I've ever owned. I'm going to detail some of the cool mods I did to it in the following paragraphs. I don't own the car anymore. Sadly the Canadian winters got to my baby and rust got the better of her. But I plan to buy a new one very soon.
Why I loved this car
The body style was so far removed from the boxy, Ford Probe-ish contours of the 3rd generation. So much better. Thank you, Honda, for getting rid of the cheesy pop-up lights from the previous generation too! The powertrain was much different too, with the Vtec Si putting out 166hp and 160ft/lbs of torque. The aftermarket selection of parts for the 4th generation made it really easy to make my Luder uniquely my own.
I'll start by detailing the performance parts that I installed on the Lude. I decided not to turbo it since the torque curve was already favorable and stock Vtecs don't last long turbo'd, without some serious piston ring and valve-train upgrades!
- The cold air intake (CAI) from Spyder was exactly what a cash-strapped tuner like me needed. It's hard to find a true CAI for under $100, and this one did the trick just fine. Really made the 2.2 sound mean! I chose black, but they offer several colors. AutoPartsToys has them on sale right now: 1992-1996 Spyder Cold Air Intake Black
- After I installed the intake, I saved up for a month or so and bought the game-changer: a ceramic-coated header from Pilot. The header is the grand daddy of all non-aspirated upgrades that you can make to your Prelude. I chose Pilot because the price was right and they're headers are known for offering sharp torque-curve improvements. I chose ceramic because I have a few buddies who told me the steel (even aluminized) would rust out in a few years or less. Stainless exhausts are too expensive and heavy to be practical.
I never actually had the car dyno'd after these upgrades, but take my word on it: the car was fast! The most impressive difference was the low-end torque response, which is often missing on 4-bangers; especially high-revving Hondas. This post is all about my 1992 Honda Prelude Si. The visual elements of a car tell people all about your personality. I did all the standard upgrades.
- I had my windows tinted at a local business. The back and quarters got limo tint (5%), the fronts were done with 35% to keep it all legal. I'm not sure what brand of tint it was, but it never bubbled or scratched during the time I had the car.
- I had the OEM wheels powder-coated in pearl white paint at shop in my area. I didn't want to buy new rims. The stock Prelude wheels are aluminum (lightweight) and look just fine for my tastes. The painted stock rims really made the car pop!
- I did change the light bezels, including a set of IPCW chrome projectors up front. IPCW offers quality without gouging your bank account. I also find they offer better sealing than other discount brands the lights never showed signs of moisture creeping in. I also went with a matching set of IPCW clear side markers.
- I went for the blacked out look in the rear (to match the dark tine) and chose Spyder Smoke Euros. These really looked awesome on the car. I'm not a fan of chrome euro tails, so for me, this really completed the look of the car.
I had to retire my Lude last year. Sadly, the Canadian winters finally got the better of her and the floor-boards rusted out. Rest in piece gorgeous... I'll never forget you.
